   n. {Muttering}.] [Prob. of imitative origin; cf. L. muttire,
   mutire.]
   1. To utter words indistinctly or with a low voice and lips
      partly closed; esp., to utter indistinct complaints or
      angry expressions; to grumble; to growl.
