Formidable \For"mi*da*ble\, a. [L. formidabilis, fr. formidare
   to fear, dread: cf. F. formidable.]
   Exciting fear or apprehension; impressing dread; adapted to
   excite fear and deter from approach, encounter, or
   undertaking; alarming.

         They seemed to fear the formodable sight. --Dryden.
