   1. (Anat.) Having a backbone, or vertebral column, containing
      the spinal marrow, as man, quadrupeds, birds, amphibia,
      and fishes.

      spine in animals. --Henslow.

   3. (Zo["o]l.) Having movable joints resembling vertebr[ae];
