Silence \Si"lence\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. {Silenced}; p. pr. & vb.
   n. {Silencing}.]
   1. To compel to silence; to cause to be still; to still; to
      hush.

            Silence that dreadful bell; it frights the isle.
