Efficient \Ef*fi"cient\, a. [L. efficiens, -entis, p. pr. of

   Causing effects; producing results; that makes the effect to
   be what it is; actively operative; not inactive, slack, or
   incapable; characterized by energetic and useful activity;
   as, an efficient officer, power.
