   to press together; sy`n with + ? to press, squeeze) +
   -meter.]
   A sensitive kind of barometer, in which the pressure of the
   atmosphere, acting upon a liquid, as oil, in the lower
   portion of the instrument, compresses an elastic gas in the
   upper part.
