Sultan \Sul"tan\, n. [F. sultan (cf. Sp. soldan, It. sultano,
   soldano), Ar. sult[=a]n sultan, dominion. Cf. {Soldan}.]
   A ruler, or sovereign, of a Mohammedan state; specifically,
   the ruler of the Turks; the Padishah, or Grand Seignior; --
   officially so called.
