Lignum rhodium \Lig"num rho"di*um\ (l[i^]g"n[u^]m
   r[=o]"d[i^]*[u^]m). [NL., fr. L. lignum wood + Gr. "ro`don a
   rose.] (Bot.)
   The fragrant wood of several shrubs and trees, especially of
   species of {Rhodorhiza} from the Canary Islands, and of the
   West Indian {Amyris balsamifera}.

Rosewood \Rose"wood\, n.
   A valuable cabinet wood of a dark red color, streaked and
   variegated with black, obtained from several tropical
   leguminous trees of the genera {Dalbergia} and
   {Mach[ae]rium}. The finest kind is from Brazil, and is said
   to be from the {Dalbergia nigra}.

   {African rosewood}, the wood of the leguminous tree
      {Pterocarpus erinaceus}.

   {Jamaica rosewood}, the wood of two West Indian trees
      ({Amyris balsamifera}, and {Linocieria ligustrina}).

   {New South Wales rosewood}, the wood of {Trichilia
      glandulosa}, a tree related to the margosa.

   The inflammable wood of certain trees ({Amyris balsamifera},
   {A. Floridana}, etc.); also, the trees themselves.
